Fresh off their first defeat of the season, Arsenal host league-leaders Liverpool for a crucial early-season tie without William Saliba and Martin Ødegaard. A loss will see the Gunners seven points adrift, while a win will put them just a point from the summit. Late fitness calls await for Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, and Olek Zinchenko.
But what do we know about the visitors? Arne Slot’s Liverpool have started very well, winning seven of their eight matches. While critics will point out their ease of schedule to begin the year, you can only play what’s in front of you. Slot has created a more balanced team that appears to be more comfortable in possession then recent iterations under Jurgen Klopp. Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, and Trent Alexander-Arnold have started the season brilliantly. And Virgil Van Dijk appears back to his best. They will, however, be without Alisson. It will be fascinating to see how Slot and Arteta plan for each other.
It's honestly hard to judge Arsenal so far this season. Three red cards in eight games will do that. Fitness updates throughout the week will have an impact on the lineup. Arteta will be hoping some of his fringe players will step up if needed. Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling have not yet found their feet this campaign. There will also be the decision in defense. If Timber isn’t ready, will Kiwior start? Could Partey play at RB with White kicking inside? To win a title, the squad comes into focus. Arsenal are being tested early, and this weekend will go a long way towards defining the trajectory of our season.
This is the biggest match of the season to date. Pack. The. Pub!
